Inspiration for a painting often comes from moments of quiet reflection, in watching the play of light, translating the shapes and patterns created in its path. I would like to bring the viewer into a shared experience, a moment of pleasure, a recognition of beauty, a sense of hope. I enjoy using strong value patterns to add visual excitement and to create a compelling structure to the compositions. I get the most gratification if I'm able to evoke an emotional response. This is true whether I'm painting from life or non-referentially. Themes of hope and contentment enter into my work as I glean subject matter from nature and everyday experiences and express them with an emotive combination of colour, shape and texture.

Cindy Bouwers is an Alberta-born painter of light and land, creating evocative oil and acrylic paintings inspired by the quiet beauty of the natural world. Through luminous colour, expressive brushwork, and layered surfaces, she explores the changing effects of light and transforms moments observed in nature into paintings that evoke presence, wonder, and quiet reflection. Moving between representation and abstraction, her work offers a sense of peace, wonder, and connection.
After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design, Cindy enjoyed a successful career as an award-winning graphic designer and educator before embracing painting as her full-time practice. Her background in design continues to influence her work through thoughtful composition, nuanced colour relationships, and a sensitivity to visual rhythm.
Recent solo exhibitions include Shadowlands at Ambrose University, Calgary (2026), and Of Light and Land at the Western GM Gallery in Drumheller (2026). Cindy has also exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions throughout Canada. In 2019, she received the Duggan Landscape Award from the Society of Canadian Artists for her painting Gust and Flurry. Earlier, she presented the two-person exhibition Of a Certain Age at the Leighton Art Centre (2020).
